But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, 7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. 8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:4-10
When I think of who He is and I think of what I've done my heart often cries out WHY? Why do you love me? Why do you consider me? Why did the God of all creation who stretched out the universe and placed the galaxies in their orbit take upon himself the form of man and come to take my place on the cross. I am but a speck on a molecule that is orbiting in a particle of dust called the Milky Way. His universe is so big that we cannot comprehend it's size or existence without becoming lost in the vastness of creation. But the one that spoke it all into existence has died for me. It is no wonder that Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 2:8 that we crucified the "Lord of Glory". There is really no other way to describe Him. He is perfect and holy and I am everything that is not.
So why did He come? Why did He take my place? Why did He take your place? It is summed up in the first line of Ephesians 2:4 - "because of His great love". As you walk through the day and put your feet in the dust from where you were created consider that life changing truth.
