Where's The Beef?
John 6:63 (NKJV) - It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits
nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.
Balloons are fun! Every kid knows that a party is better with those
wonderful pieces of rubber filled with hot air. They come in all sorts
of shapes and colors that can thrill just about any heart. But when the
party is over they aren’t much use. The plastic can’t hold the air for
long and soon the realization that these empty stretched out shapes
were temporary and disappointing. There are many things in life that
teach us the same lesson. An empty glass will never fulfill its purpose
it must be filled before it is truly useful. Our flesh profits nothing
unless it is filled with something beautiful, something that fulfills
the purpose of the packaging. I have been known to have a little fun
with a balloon, minus the air. They can be made to squeal, snap, and
sling through the air but really there is not much profit in it. Our
lives are like that when we are not filled with the Spirit. We can make
a little noise and even have some momentary fun but our days are short
lived and when it is over we really haven’t accomplished anything that
will endure. If we want to accomplish works that will stand the test of
time, we must start with something that is eternal.
Our
flesh is just a tent, a temporary home. Those that have had their
spiritual eyes opened know we are just passing through this life and
what lies ahead is the real goal. When we get bogged down with the
emptiness of this world and the lusts of this fleshly body we lose sight
of the prize. That is why Paul said. “Forgetting those things that are
behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press
toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ
Jesus.” I refuse to filled with the “hot air” of this world. I want to
be filled with the Spirit, motivated by the heart of God, pressing
towards the goal, and filling my vessel with life – I want the beef!
